The Mountain Hare Management guidance has been reviewed following the new legislation that came into effect on 1st March 2021. Land managers must now hold a licence (issued for certain limited reasons listed under section 16 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) in order to kill mountain hares.

NatureScot are developing the licensing scheme for mountain hare and more details will become available from July 2021. The guidance presented here signposts practitioners seeking a licence to the relevant web pages.
